HumaniTerra begun in 2010 a vast restructuration program for the Herat regional hospital’s urgency unit and operating theatre (the H.O.T program: Herat Operating Theatre), with the Italian civil cooperation and the Japanese Embassy.
We first lent our expertise to outline the architectural and medical choices most suited to the local environment. We have transported and installed all the equipment (electro-cardioscope, mechanical ventilators, surgical instruments, ultrasound…) and trained the health staff to ensure the autonomy and sustainability of the unit.
Nowadays the O.T (8 operating theatres) is fully operational and welcomes patients from the entire Herat region.
Boris Lepladec, nurse anaesthetists, has actively participated in this program. He has published an article about the main stages of project and his personal experience in “Revue nationale des Infirmiers Anesthésistes”. A must read if you want to understand more about HumaniTerra’s involvement in Afghanistan over the last few months.
