MATERNAL HEALTH

HumaniTerra gives particular attention to women’s’ health and reproductive health.

For 10 years, the association has endeavoured to create a network of international practitioners and specialists able to intervene according to the needs and issues encountered in this field.

Thanks to this network, HumaniTerra has succeeded in providing assistance to the women of several countries: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, and Haiti. These dedicated surgeons and their teams also take action in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in particular within the scope of projects concerning fistulas, reconstructive surgery, obstetrics, care during childbirth, post-partum care, and projects to combat infant and maternal mortality.

400,000 maternal deaths

400,000 women die every year in the world due to lack of access to basic surgery care during their pregnancy.

What is an obstetric fistula?

An obstetric fistula is the formation of an abnormal communication between the bladder and the vagina or between the bladder and the rectum arising from a complicated pregnancy.

Fistula is a global problem, especially common in Africa. It usually occurs during prolonged labor, when a woman does not get the necessary Caesarean section.

Delegation

HumaniTerra encourages the training of nurses in basic surgical procedures such as caesarean section as an effective response to the lack of access to surgery care in the countries of the South.
